Smog is air pollution consisting of harmful substances, such as suspended particles, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, tropospheric ozone, and volatile organic compounds. The name "smog" comes from the combination of the English words "smoke" and "fog." There are two main types of smog: classic London smog and photochemical smog (Los Angeles type).

London smog

London smog is mainly caused by the burning of solid fuels, such as coal. It is characteristic of cold and humid areas. It consists mainly of sulfur dioxide, smoke, and soot. It occurs on cold days with low wind speed and thermal inversion, which traps pollutants close to the ground.

Photochemical smog

Photochemical smog is typical for large cities with a warm climate. It results from chemical reactions between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds under the influence of sunlight, leading to the formation of tropospheric ozone and other harmful substances.

What are the effects of smog?

Smog has adverse effects on human health, causing respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and deteriorating overall quality of life. Prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to serious illnesses.

The natural environment also suffers from smog. Air pollution has a negative impact on vegetation, acidifies soil and water, and contributes to climate change by increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases.
